LAS PALLAS DE CORONGO


The celebration in honor of San Pedro de Corongo is organized, by the Water Judge, that has several collaborators; these could be six or more, these persons are the denominated "Campos", the "Campos" are forced to dress as a "Palla" to his wife or daughter; at the present time this fact is extensive to the near nieces and relatives.

The clothes of which is composed the tipical suit of "palla de corongo", consists of a head article, that it has a circular form of pure silk, which is adorned with fine multicolor feathers, from they hang long colored ribbons that go throughout the back; until the waist approximately; to the wide thing of the forehead it hangs a hairband of pearl and precious stone; earrings, short necklace of gold, silver and precious stones shine; they dress embroiders and a skirt velvet, "anaco" of blue colour, garnet, green or black color, the "anaco" is adorned with mirrors and golden and silverplated spangles; the arms are covered by wide sleeves that beat as a wings when they are dancing; the footwear generally is of chamois and matches with the "anaco".

The Pallas dances alone for the streets, to the rhythm of the band or the typical "roncadoras", with full movements of grace, harmony and enchantment, that altogether impregnate the atmosphere of a smiling sensation of spring and evoke with their beauty to the "Coyas of the old inca empire".

The Pallas carries fine licores of flavoured like aniseed or mint, that are offered to the people in corners and vestibules.

Dress the Pallas is an art and like so; there is people which are specialized in that art. The rent of the clothes is a also an business, important sums of money are received, which often depends if the suit is use for the first time or not. Between recognized and of pleasing remain, in Corongo they appear, Doña Mirasanta Shipash Mashi by the decade of the fifties, call thus with affection by all the town; due to its jovial and striking presence, that knew to dress with art and gentleness the more pretty Pallas. Other remembered lady who also dressed Pallas was Doña Baldomera Sotomayor Utrilla, well-known like "Doña Baldo" that lived in Malambo, another lady also remembered with affection is Doña Cata Liñan, of Chopimarca.
