MOQUEGUA DEPARTMENT - DEPARTAMENTO DE MOQUEGUA

The Department of Moquegua, located on the coast of the south of Peru, has as you limit by the north and the east the department of Puno, by the south to the one of Tacna and to the Oceano Pacifico and, by the east, to the department of Arequipa.

Its surface this calculated in 15,734 km2 and its population is of but of 135 thousand inhabitants. This divided in 3 provinces: Marshal Nieto, General Sanchez Cerro and Ilo.

Its geografica configuration is interesting by its volcanico aspect and his morfologia. This formed by the high part of rio Inn, that ends at Arequipa and is one of but the torrentosos ones and escarped bed but of the coast. It is born to but of 5 thousand ms of altitude, to the east of Misti volcano and the Pichu-Pichu, forming deep gerges that can be divided in three sectors.

The first a the northwest formed by Puquina and the Chapel - true oases nailed between rocks -, deserticas skirts and some terraces where the horticulture is possible, producing alfalfa of first quality and fruit trees, specially vineyards, due to the good climate and to the wealth of grounds.

The second broken sector or of Omate, one of but populated and fecund grounds of the department. In its proximities is Ubinas volcano.

In the South part of the system of rio Inn - of Ichu?a name in algun section of its route -, to the west of snowed San Antonio de Esquilache, in its deep gorges, is the locality of Carumas, that composes the third sector.

But over all this Moquegua it is characterized by his olives, the candies, the religious fruits, customs farmers, celebrations and the old traditions that conform the moqueguano folklore. Its economic activity is important, including thousand of retailers and visitors. The greater attractions for the tourism are in the natural beauties of the region. For example, the Lagoons of Lariscota, Vizcachas and Great Pasto, offer an attractiveness of first order to the visitor. In them, the hunting and the fishing are abundant. Who suffer of diseases like the reumatismo, they can find remedies for its evils in the numerous thermal sources like the one of Carumas. Hundreds of people go until these sources, specially in the months of January to March.

El Departamento de Moquegua, situado sobre el litoral del sur del Perú, tiene como limites por el norte y al este al departamento de Puno, por el sur al de Tacna y al Oceano Pacifico y, por el oriente, al departamento de Arequipa.

Su superficie esta calculada en 15,734 km2 y su poblacion es de mas de 135 mil habitantes. Esta dividido en 3 provincias: Mariscal Nieto, General Sanchez Cerro e Ilo.

Su configuracion geografica es interesante por su aspecto volcanico y su morfologia. Esta formado por la parte alta del rio Tambo, que desemboca en Arequipa y es uno de los mas torrentosos y de lecho mas escarpado de la costa. Nace a mas de 5 mil m de altitud, al este del volcan Misti y del Pichu-Pichu, formando unas profundas encañadas que pueden dividirse en tres sectores.

El primero al noroeste formado por Puquina y La Capilla - verdaderos oasis enclavados entre rocas -, faldas deserticas y algunas terrazas donde es posible la horticultura, produciendo alfalfa de primera calidad y frutales, especialmente viñedos, debido al buen clima y a la riqueza de los suelos.

El segundo sector o quebrada de Omate, uno de los mas poblados y fecundos suelos del departamento. En sus proximidades se encuentra el volcan Ubinas.

En la parte sur del sistema del rio Tambo - de nombre Ichuña en algun tramo de su recorrido -, al oeste del nevado San Antonio de Esquilache, en sus profundas quebradas, se encuentra la localidad de Carumas, que compone el tercer sector.

Pero por encima de todo esto Moquegua se caracteriza por sus aceitunas, los dulces, las frutas, las costumbres campesinas, las fiestas religiosas y las viejas tradiciones que conforman el folklore moqueguano. Su actividad econ?mica es importante, dando cabida a miles de comerciantes y visitantes. Las mayores atracciones para el turismo se encuentran en las bellezas naturales de la regi?n. Por ejemplo, las Lagunas de Lariscota, Vizcachas y Pasto Grande, ofrecen un atractivo de primer orden al visitante. En ellas, la caza y la pesca son abundantes. Quienes sufren de enfermedades como el reumatismo, pueden encontrar remedios para sus males en las numerosas fuentes termales como la de Carumas. Centenares de personas acuden hasta estas fuentes, especialmente en los meses de enero a marzo.
