PUYA RAIMONDI Or TITANCA

The Puya Raimondi (Puya raimondii) or Titanca, is one of the plants more impressive than it exists on the Earth. Relative of the fragmentation hand grenade, is the greatest bromeliácea, and has in addition several characteristics that make it only.

During tens of years, their thorny leaves are growing until seeming, in the distance, a gigante(chagual maguey or ágave, in other parts of the world), which gets to measure up to four meters of height, and that of by himself constitutes an unusual spectacle in the level dryness of puna; it arrives of the 4.000 meters of altitude.

Soon, suddenly it begins to grow the inflorescencia, until reaching between eight and ten meters of height. There is no greater inflorescencia on the planet (it produces 5000 flowers). They say that the plant only blooms when it gets to turn the one hundred years of age, and after loosen to his seeds (it produces 6'000,000 of seeds) the plant it dies.

The Titancas or Puyas Raimodi, grows in "forests", for want of better name to denominate the spaces located in puna, in which it is developed. The known forest more is in the reserve of the National Park Huascarán, in the department of Ancash.
