Ubicada a 562 msnm, Tacna es hoy una prospera ciudad moderna, poseedora de un excelente clima templado, benigno y acogedor. Durante los meses de invierno se observan densas neblinas al amanecer, denominadas "camanchacas", y fuertes vientos de direccion suroeste.
Tacna fue declarada "Heroica Ciudad" por el Congreso Constituyente el 21 de mayo de 1821, "por sus servicios distinguidos a la causa de la independencia, que han recomendado su patriotismo de un modo singular".
La poblacion tacneña se mostro tambien indoblegable ante la ocupacion chilena durante y despues de la guerra del Pacifico y regreso al seno de la patria tras medio siglo de duro y heroico cautiverio.
Unida por un buen sistema de caminos a Ilo, Moquegua y Arica, Tacna tiene ademas un activo intercambio comercial con Puno e Ilave, capital de la provincia del Collao, ciudades a las que provee de frutas, licores y vinos, para recibir a cambio los productos de la sierra.
No hay turista que estando en Tacna no visite la ciudad de Arica - que pertenecio al Perú -, dada su cercania (a solo 56 km), y las facilidades de transporte existentes. Arica se encuentra al pie del historico morro, escenario de la batalla del mismo nombre, en cuya cumbre los chilenos han levantado un museo de sitio sobre los restos de las originales fortificaciones peruanas; en el se conservan antiguos cañones, restos de armas, uniformes, banderas, etc.
Pero indudablemente, lo que congrega el mayor numero de visitantes en esta ciudad es el activo comercio que alimenta a los conocidos mercadillos tacneños de "Bolognesi", "28 de Julio", "Tupac Amaru" y "Polvos Rosados", donde se pueden conseguir a precios ventajosos toda clase de articulos y artefactos. Por esta razon se hallan constantemente abarrotados de compradores provenientes de Lima y otras ciudades.
