LOCATION, EXTENSION And POPULATION

The department of Apurímac is located in the south, limits with Cusco, Arequipa and Ayacucho. It has a rough geography, it is located between immense hills and deep abysses. To be located in the mountain range, most of the year its climate is dominated in rains and low temperatures; it is recommended to travel between the months of June and October.

It has an extension of 20.654 kilometers square.

BRIEF REVIEW HISTORICA

Andahuaylas. The most modern city of the department rises on the 2 thousand 980 meters s.n.m and has a cold climate slightly. Its main church is the Cathedral of San Pedro and was constructed on the basis of colonial architecture. In his Seat of Arms it emphasizes the constructed sink of a single stone.

PLATES And DRINKS TIPICAS

February. Carnivals. The town turns upside down to the streets to participate in the Gunsa (it knocks down mount). It is the only opportunity in which Apurímac shows all its folklore with comparsas street disguised and dancing by all the districts. In Andahuaylas the women and men dance in gangs during day and night. In Grau, bullfights of bulls are organized and the eve the "torril practices velacuy" (evening to the bulls) to drive away the bad spirits and to avoid that they cause damages to the bullfigthers. In Aymaraes representing of different districts they face slings, to way of duel, being hurt and bruised at the end of this duel.

13 of May. Festividad of the Virgin of Fátima. Great unfolding of folklore, specially music and dance. From different places from the department musical groups arrive at Grau numerous to show their art.

24 of June. Farming fair of Pachaconas (Antabamba) where the best products of the region are exhibited. Called butler Carguyoc is in charge to entertain all the assistants.

28 of July. YAWAR CELEBRATION in CHALHUANCA - AYMARAES. Run of bulls with Cóndores tied to the back. Traditional celebration although is made in all the department, has its special fame in this provincia.También are fights of roosters and the traditional Stroll to the Lagoon of Pacucha, where there is very good fishing of trouts.

15 of August. Festividad of the Virgin of Asuncio'n. The province of Grau turns upside down to the streets to attend the processions and prayers in the streets. Simultaneously "tinca" is executed or marks of the cattle. In Cotabambas the celebration is celebrated with Yawar Celebration.

24 of September. Celebration of Our Lady of the Mercedes. By means of Convido or invitation, all the town of Antabamba participates dancing, drinking, eating or attending the bullfights of bulls and flat racing.

7 of October. Celebration of the Virgin of the Rosary, festividad in which takes part all the town of Abancay. There are processions and fireworks. The Alferado or Mayordomo runs with all the expenses of the celebration.

3 of November. Day of Abancay with diverse sport, folkloric and social activities. Also there is fight of in excess roosters and of bulls.

8 of December. Festividad of the Virgin of the Conception. In Cotabambas dance in the main seat during three or four nights before and after the celebration.

25 of December. During Christmas Eve and Christmas, the inhabitants of Cotabambas, go out to dance with the disguised dancers. Adorations to the boy are made in great concentrations where all the town sings and says. Also there are processions, fireworks and banquets with typical plates.

OTHER ATTRACTIVE TURISTICOS OF THE DEPARTMENT
